Marwais Azizi, owner of the Azizi Group, says that during his business trip to China, he has begun a series of official meetings aimed at expanding energy cooperation between Afghan and Chinese companies. According to him, the primary focus of these discussions is a project to build coal-fired power plants in Baghlan Province.
Azizi said that on the first day of his visit, he met with executives of Run Power in Jinan, Shandong Province, where the two sides discussed the engineering, design, and construction of power generation projects. He added that a cooperation agreement between Azizi Energy and Run Power is expected to be finalized soon.
According to Azizi, the project forms part of Afghanistan’s broader 10,000-megawatt power generation program, under which 1,000 megawatts of electricity are planned to be produced in Baghlan Province alone.
Marwais Azizi also stated that his delegation will meet with other Chinese companies in the coming days to explore investment opportunities and joint cooperation in coal, solar, and wind energy projects.
The developments come after the Azizi Group signed a US$10 billion agreement with the Taliban last year to develop 10,000 megawatts of power generation capacity. However, the project has so far seen only limited practical progress.
