The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has announced that beekeeping can become a sustainable source of household income for both women and men in Afghanistan. According to the report, families can earn up to about $400 annually from this activity and use it as one of the suitable economic options at the household level.
Based on information from this organization, each beehive can produce up to 50 kilograms of honey during two harvesting seasons. This level of production can play an important role in meeting families’ financial needs and also provide opportunities for gradual product sales.
The report states that honey, due to its long shelf life, allows families to store it and use or sell it whenever financial needs arise. This feature enables households to benefit from its income throughout different times of the year and experience less economic pressure.
It was also emphasized that beekeeping requires relatively low initial investment and can be managed inside or around the home. For this reason, this activity has been introduced as a suitable option for increasing household income, especially for women, in different parts of Afghanistan.
