Former Kabul University professor Mahmood Marhoon made remarks about the relationship between education and socio-economic conditions. He stated that people in Nangarhar are more inclined toward education because they do not have sufficient agricultural land.
Referring to the people of Kandahar, he said that due to the abundance of land and the relative ease of life there, interest in education is lower, in his view, and people tend to prefer a simpler lifestyle.
These remarks have sparked widespread reactions on social media. Some users described the view as controversial, arguing that education is not a substitute for economic well-being but rather a fundamental path to societal progress.
Dr. Tanha, a nuclear energy specialist, responded to Marhoon’s comments on his Facebook page, writing that the presence or absence of land and economic resources cannot replace education, and that learning is a basic necessity for people of all social classes.
Meanwhile, some Kandahari activists described Marhoon’s remarks as his personal opinion and emphasized that the people of Kandahar have played an important role in the fields of knowledge and education throughout the history of Kabul University.
