A number of Afghan migrants residing in Iran gathered on Wednesday in front of the Afghan Embassy in Tehran, which is currently under Taliban control, to express their support for the recent public protests in Herat.
Participants in the gathering chanted slogans such as “Work, Education, and Freedom,” calling for greater attention to the demands and rights of Afghan citizens.
The protesters also carried placards emphasizing solidarity with the people of Herat. One of the signs read: “The true document of dignity is the pure blood of the young martyrs of Jebrail, Herat.”
According to a video shared with media outlets, one participant urged citizens to stand alongside Afghan women and the people of Afghanistan, stressing that the blood of the victims must not be forgotten.
The gathering took place one day after public demonstrations in the Jebrail district of Herat Province, which, according to reports, were met with intervention and suppression by Taliban forces.
The recent events in Herat have drawn reactions from a number of activists, politicians, and members of the Afghan diaspora both inside and outside the country, many of whom have called for attention to the situation of protesters and those reportedly detained.
