Kuwait has announced the suspension of all flights at the country’s international airport from Tuesday evening until safety measures have been completed and full operational readiness has been confirmed. The Kuwaiti Directorate General of Civil Aviation stated that flights have been diverted to alternative airports.
The decision was taken following an attack that Kuwaiti authorities have attributed to the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, technical teams have begun assessing and evaluating the damage sustained by the airport’s facilities and operational systems in order to carry out repairs and restoration work as swiftly as possible.
In its statement, the authority did not provide further details regarding the exact timeline for the full resumption of airport operations. Officials have also not yet indicated when flights are expected to return to normal schedules.
Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan, the official spokesperson for Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense, announced that several drones targeted Terminal 1 of Kuwait International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to him, the attack caused extensive material damage and left several individuals injured.
Al-Atwan added that the injured were transferred to medical facilities to receive treatment and remain under medical care and observation.
The Ministry of Defense spokesperson further emphasized that the country’s armed forces, in coordination with the relevant authorities, are continuously monitoring developments and remain fully prepared to respond to any potential contingencies.
He concluded by stating that Kuwait’s armed forces will take all necessary measures to safeguard national security, maintain stability, and protect the country’s critical infrastructure.
