A photograph taken nearly two decades ago during a charity event has now become one of the most captivating stories in world football. In 2007, Argentine football star Lionel Messi held a five-month-old baby in his arms and helped bathe him as part of a charitable initiative. Nineteen years later, that same child is on the verge of facing Messi on the biggest stage in football.
Lionel Andrés Messi, captain of the Argentina national team, is regarded as one of the most decorated footballers in history, having won eight Ballon d’Or awards, six European Golden Shoes, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Now, in what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance, Messi is set to face a young star with whom he unknowingly shared a historic moment when the player was still an infant.
The iconic photograph was captured in 2007 by Juan Monfort, a photographer for the Associated Press, at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. During the UNICEF charity event, 20-year-old Messi held a five-month-old baby and helped bathe him in one of the program’s symbolic moments. That child would later become known as Lamine Yamal.
At the time, Lamine Yamal’s family lived in the city of Mataró and had won a charity raffle that gave them the opportunity to meet and take photographs with one of Barcelona’s players. The encounter led to the creation of the now-famous image. Years later, Monfort said he never imagined that the baby in the photograph would one day become one of the most outstanding talents in world football.
Lamine Yamal was born on July 13, 2007, near Barcelona, and began his football journey at a local club. At the age of seven, he joined Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy and progressed rapidly through the youth ranks, eventually earning a place in first-team training sessions.
Xavi Hernández, Barcelona’s head coach at the time, was among the first managers to give Yamal an opportunity with the senior team. He made his La Liga debut at the age of 15 and went on to break several records, including becoming Barcelona’s youngest player and youngest goalscorer in the Spanish league, cementing his name in the club’s history.
In the summer of 2024, Yamal also helped Spain win the UEFA European Championship. In addition to lifting the trophy, he set records as the youngest player and youngest goalscorer in the history of the tournament, further establishing himself as one of the most promising young stars in world football.
Now 19 years old, Yamal has played a crucial role in Spain’s journey to the World Cup final in his first appearance at the tournament. He has featured in six matches, scoring one goal, while also becoming one of his team’s key players through his dribbling ability, chance creation, and ability to disrupt opposing defensive structures.
On the other side, Messi is attempting to defend Argentina’s World Cup title in what is expected to be the final tournament of his illustrious career. The meeting between Messi and Yamal represents a clash between two generations of football: one a legendary figure who has achieved countless honors, and the other a young star at the beginning of what could become a remarkable career.
The Argentina–Spain encounter, regardless of the final result, has already become one of football’s most memorable narratives because of that historic photograph from 2007—a match in which the baby who was once held by Messi is now competing for the same trophy that the Argentine legend lifted years later.
