Sources say that the Taliban are expected to appoint Mawlavi Amanuddin Mansour, the current governor of Helmand, as the new governor of Badakhshan in the coming days. According to the sources, the decision has been made due to the deteriorating security situation in Badakhshan and with the aim of strengthening control over the province.
The Taliban have not yet made any official statement regarding the appointment of Amanuddin Mansour.
After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Amanuddin Mansour was appointed as the governor of Badakhshan. He later served as the Taliban’s general commander of the air force before being appointed governor of Helmand earlier this year.
During the Taliban’s insurgency against the former republic government, he also served as the Taliban’s shadow governor and military commander in Badakhshan. Reports indicate that he led Taliban military operations in several districts of the province.
According to sources, some Taliban members in Badakhshan are dissatisfied with the performance of the current governor, Mawlavi Ismail Ghaznavi, and are seeking increased efforts to manage the security situation through Taliban officials originally from Badakhshan.
Amanuddin Mansour is considered one of the Taliban’s influential figures from Badakhshan. Earlier this year, during a graduation ceremony for religious students in the province, he warned that he would respond harshly to opponents.
Meanwhile, following the assassination of Zabihullah Amiri, the former Taliban head of Information and Culture in Badakhshan, by ISIS-Khorasan, concerns over the security situation in the province have increased among Taliban officials.
