Summary

Mullah Abdul Wasi, the chief of staff of the Taliban’s prime minister office, met with senior Chinese investors led by Wang Bin Chiang to discuss development and investment opportunities in mineral resources, highways, the Salang Tunnel, and the Wakhan corridor in Afghanistan.

The Taliban-controlled Arg said in a statement on Monday,18 May, that the Chinese investors stated during the meeting that they possess advanced technology and sufficient experience in high-rise construction, highways, mining extraction, oil refining, and hydroelectric dams, and they intend to transfer this technology to Afghanistan as well.

According to the statement, the Chinese side emphasized that it would make major investments, particularly in highways, to increase Afghanistan’s exports and improve trade facilities with Asian countries.

Meanwhile, Mullah Abdul Wasi said that the Taliban government has provided full opportunities for domestic and foreign investors to participate in the reconstruction and development of the Salang Tunnel and the Wakhan Corridor, in addition to mining projects. He added that foreign investors should pay attention not only to their personal interests, but also to Afghanistan’s national interests and the Taliban’s principles, and should carry out their activities according to professional standards.

This comes as several foreign investors had previously made similar promises regarding investment in Afghanistan, but most of those commitments were never implemented and remained only at the announcement stage.
