The U.S. Department of State has announced that its consulate in Peshawar will be gradually closed, and diplomatic responsibilities related to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will henceforth be handled through the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.
The released statement says that this measure is being taken to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel and to manage resources more efficiently.
Washington emphasized that its diplomatic presence in Pakistan will continue through its missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, and engagement with local officials in Peshawar will also be maintained.
Although U.S. officials describe this decision as part of administrative and financial efficiency, some analysts believe that the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the primary reason for the consulate’s closure.
The U.S. also stated that despite the reduced physical presence in Peshawar, its strategic priorities regarding Pakistan will remain unchanged.
