Adam Boehler, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, stated that the conviction of Haji Najibullah, a former Taliban commander, sends a clear message to those involved in hostage-taking and supporters of terrorism.
The Office of the Special Presidential Envoy issued a statement on Wednesday emphasizing that hostage-taking is not a negotiating tool but a criminal act, and that perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions.
The statement noted that individuals who abduct U.S. citizens and subject their families to distress and uncertainty will, sooner or later, face the consequences of their actions.
Adam Boehler also said that the ruling reflects the United States’ commitment to prosecuting those responsible for such crimes, adding that Washington will continue to pursue justice and accountability on behalf of victims.
Haji Najibullah, a former Taliban commander, was sentenced to 42 years in prison by a New York court on Tuesday for his involvement in the kidnapping of American journalist David Rohde and two of his companions.
U.S. officials have described the sentence as part of ongoing efforts to combat hostage-taking and hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable.
