Former Head of Strategic Communications at the Presidential Palace during Afghanistan’s republican era, Wahid Omar, has commented on the recent public protests in Herat Province, stating that people’s willingness to stand up against oppression and authoritarianism is, in itself, a significant and noteworthy development.
In a recent statement, he noted that although it remains unclear how widespread these protests may become or whether they will be able to continue, the most important aspect, in his view, is that people are raising their voices against injustice and unfair treatment.
Omar further stated that, in recent years, many Afghan men had not taken a visible stand in defense of the rights of their wives and daughters. However, he described the recent demonstrations in Herat as a potential sign of change in this regard.
He expressed hope that the actions of Herat’s residents would inspire demands for rights, greater civic awareness, and public awakening in other parts of the country as well.
These remarks come amid widespread reactions to public protests in Herat, which were sparked by the detention of women and the imposition of restrictions on them.
