Akbar Abdi, a prominent and widely respected Iranian film and television actor, passed away on Friday at the age of 65 due to cardiac arrest.
According to reports, Abdi had been dealing with heart and kidney complications in recent years and had been hospitalized multiple times for treatment. He had also remained under medical care in recent months.
His death was first reported by Iranian state media, prompting a wave of reactions from the artistic community and cinema enthusiasts.
Abdi enjoyed significant popularity in Afghanistan as well, where many followers of Iranian cinema held deep affection for his diverse and memorable performances.
Born in 1960 in Tehran, Abdi began his artistic career in the late 1970s. Over several decades, he appeared in numerous films and television series, becoming one of the most beloved and influential figures in Iranian cinema—particularly through his work in comedy.
His notable works include Mother, The Snowman, The Actor, and Ekhrajiha. He also received the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor at the Fajr Film Festival for his performance in I’m Sleepy, directed by Reza Attaran.
Abdi’s ability to portray a wide spectrum of characters from humorous roles to complex and challenging performances was a defining strength of his artistic career and earned him a lasting place among audiences of cinema and television.
