Summary

Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs, said that more than 12 billion Afghanis is allocated annually to support the families of those the group refers to as “martyrs,” as well as orphans and people with disabilities.

Hanafi made the remarks during a ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. He said the support program covers two groups of families of people killed during the war, with annual financial assistance provided to them.

According to Hanafi, one group consists of Taliban fighters who are officially referred to by the group as “martyrs.” The second group includes the families of members of the security forces of the former government who were killed during the conflict.

Hanafi added that, unlike their own forces, the Taliban do not use the term “martyr” for members of the former government’s security forces, instead referring to them as “those who were killed.” However, he claimed that the families of both groups receive financial assistance.

The Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs also claimed that the assistance is distributed equally and without discrimination among eligible recipients, with more than 12 billion Afghanis allocated annually to the program.

According to Hanafi, the program covers not only the families of those killed in the war but also orphans and people with disabilities. He did not provide further details on the number of beneficiaries or the amount of assistance provided to each family.
