The United Nations has announced that nearly six million Afghans have returned to Afghanistan since 2023, and it is expected that another three million Afghans will return to their country by the end of 2026.
According to the UN plan, around 1.7 million Afghans are scheduled to return from Iran and another 1.1 million from Pakistan between April and December 2026.
According to the report, a total of nearly 5.9 million Afghans have returned to the country since September 2023, placing unprecedented pressure on Afghanistan’s economic and social structures.
The United Nations says that more than half of the returnees are women and children, many of whom grew up outside Afghanistan.
The organization added that, in the first phase, approximately 100.7 million dollars have been allocated for emergency assistance along border areas to provide healthcare services, nutrition, social support, water and sanitation facilities, and cash assistance.
In the second phase, more than 428 million dollars have been allocated for the resettlement of returnees in 35 priority sectors.
According to the United Nations, these programs include employment opportunities, access to education and healthcare services, housing support, and strengthening the integration of returnees into host communities.
Meanwhile, monitoring organizations have warned that the lack of sufficient financial support may seriously hinder the implementation of these projects.
