Afghan footballer Khalida Popal has been included in TIME magazine’s list of the 100 most influential figures in sports for 2026.
In its report, TIME wrote that Khalida Popal has made tireless efforts toward the development, continuity, and revival of women’s football in Afghanistan. She is considered one of the founders of the Afghanistan women’s national football team in 2007 and played a key role in establishing its official structure.
According to the report, Popal not only led the team on the field but also carried out extensive work off the field to expand and support girls’ football.
TIME noted that progress in Afghan women’s football faced serious setbacks after the Taliban returned to power, but Khalida Popal has continued her efforts despite the challenges.
Now residing in Denmark, she has founded a team called “Afghan Women United” for migrant female footballers, bringing together Afghan players from different countries.
She has also worked to secure official recognition of the team by FIFA. In April 2026, FIFA formally recognized the team, allowing Afghan women footballers to participate in international competitions.
