Pakistani media have reported that a court in Islamabad has sentenced Umar Hayat, the killer of Sana Yousaf, to death.
According to a report by the newspaper Dawn, Umar Hayat’s trial was held on Tuesday, 20 May.
After establishing his guilt, the judge sentenced Umar Hayat to death and ordered him to pay two million rupees in compensation to the victim’s family.
In addition to the murder charge, Umar Hayat was also convicted on other charges, including theft from Sana Yousaf’s home, and was sentenced to a total of 21 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Seventeen-year-old Sana Yousaf was killed on 2 June 2025 at her home in Islamabad, moments after cutting her birthday cake. She was shot twice.
Sana Yousaf was originally from the Chitral region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and was a medical student who was active on social media, especially TikTok.
Two days after the incident, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry announced the arrest of Umar Hayat on charges of murdering Sana Yousaf.
Umar Hayat was also active on social media.
He stated that the motive for the murder was Sana Yousaf’s rejection of his advances.
At the time of his arrest, Sana Yousaf’s iPhone was recovered from Umar’s possession.
Nasir Rizvi, the Islamabad prosecutor general, had said that the accused took Sana Yousaf’s mobile phone after the murder in order to delete the call history between them.
Sana Yousaf’s mother and aunt were among the 27 witnesses who appeared in court and testified.
