Summary

Asif Durrani, former Pakistani special envoy for Afghanistan, said that the issue of “regime change” diverts the main path to solving Afghanistan’s problems. He emphasized that Afghanistan’s stability depends on the formation of an inclusive and legitimate government that is established by the Afghan people themselves.

On Monday, 14th of Sawr, Asif Durrani, former Pakistani special representative for Afghanistan, wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the issue of “regime change” in Afghanistan may align with foreign agendas, but he stressed that such an action does not solve Afghanistan’s core problem.

The former Pakistani diplomat stated that the Taliban do not accept pluralism and political participation. According to Durrani, this has undermined the domestic and international legitimacy of the group.

The former Pakistani envoy for Afghanistan emphasized that without broad participation and the consent of the people, governance remains limited. Durrani wrote that currently, political power in Afghanistan is concentrated between the Haqqani faction in Kabul and Mullah Hibatullah in Kandahar. He added that the Taliban administration “lacks broad political participation.”

Asif Durrani also noted that no system based on the exclusion of others can remain sustainable, and a system that does not reflect Afghanistan’s diversity will remain fragile and at risk of collapse.

According to Durrani, change is inevitable, but the main question is how this change will occur. In his view, the extent to which the Taliban understand this reality will determine Afghanistan’s future.
